Why I Encourage Meditation, Yoga, and Spiritual Practice Alongside Therapy
I often encourage clients to explore meditation, yoga, or a personal spiritual practice alongside psychotherapy because meaningful change happens not only through insight, but through regulation, embodiment, and integration. While therapy provides a structured space to understand patterns, process experiences, and build psychological insight, practices such as meditation and yoga help translate that work into the body and daily life.
Meditation supports increased self-awareness, emotional regulation, and the ability to observe thoughts and feelings without becoming overwhelmed by them. Yoga and other embodied practices foster a deeper connection to the nervous system, helping individuals develop greater tolerance for discomfort, presence with emotion, and a felt sense of safety. Together, these practices can strengthen the foundation needed for therapeutic work to be effective and sustainable.
For many people, a spiritual or contemplative practice; defined in a way that feels personal and non-dogmatic. This also provides a sense of meaning, grounding, and connection that complements psychological healing. When approached thoughtfully, these practices do not replace therapy; rather, they support the therapeutic process by reinforcing skills such as mindfulness, self-compassion, and intentional living. Any recommendations I make are offered with respect for each individual’s beliefs, values, and readiness, and are meant to enhance, not complicate, the work we do in therapy.
